Corn and agave — the twin staples of rural Mexico — married in one glass. Mezcal Vago began when an American surfer landed in an Oaxacan hospital, fell for his nurse, and discovered her father, Aquilino García López, was a farmer quietly making extraordinary mezcal in remote Candelaria Yegolé. Elote is the García family's signature: their traditional celebration mezcal, made from 100% ripe Espadín, with heirloom corn from the family farm toasted on a comal and added to the still for the final distillation. Today Aquilino's sons carry on his exact methods, and the result is unlike anything else — smoky toasted corn and river stone on the nose, honeycomb, roasted sweet corn, and green tropical fruit on the palate, finishing long with mint and gentle warmth at a full-flavored ~50%. Rated 94 points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge. Sip it neat from a copita alongside mole, grilled corn, or a birthday worth remembering.
