Selvapiana Chianti Rufina 24
From the smallest and highest of Chianti's subzones — Rufina, tucked into the Apennine foothills east of Florence, where mountain passes funnel cooling breezes over the vineyards — comes what many consider the benchmark estate of the entire appellation. Selvapiana has been in the same family since 1826, is farmed organically as a matter of course rather than conversion, and was a pioneer of pure-Sangiovese winemaking in Tuscany. Sangiovese from 15–40-year-old vines on stony clay-limestone soils ferments with native yeasts in stainless steel, then rests a year in large neutral French casks. The 2024 is all Rufina elegance: lifted cherry and ripe raspberry brushed with wild orange, savory earth, and saline minerality over fine, gently gripping tannins — often compared to fine Pinot Noir in its finesse. Made for mushroom pasta, roast chicken, and anything off the grill.
