Mal Bien Alto Madrecuishe 750m
The pride of a 200-person village. Madrecuishe — a tall, columnar cousin of Espadín from the Agave karwinskii family — is the signature plant of the Miahuatlán district, and nobody expresses it like Felipe and Ageo Cortes of tiny Mengoli de Morelos. Felipe has been a mezcalero for over 55 years; his son Ageo, the fourth generation, insists the whole family belongs on the credit line — mother Cesilia, wife Asela, sisters Amelia and Griselda. Their madrecuishe grows in the chalky fields beside the family home, then gets the long treatment: an 8–10 day pit roast over encino, mesquite, and yegareche wood, a 5–7 day rest before the ox-drawn tahona, open-air fermentation, and double distillation through copper. The result is karwinskii magic — fruit-candy sweetness and chamomile florals over wildflower honey, grapefruit peel, cocoa, and deep chalky minerality. One of the benchmark madrecuishes in the US market, batch by tiny batch.
