Maison Saint Vivant Corton Les Renardes 22
Grand Cru Burgundy from the fox's den. Les Renardes — "the foxes" — is one of the great climats on the mighty hill of Corton, where iron-rich marl soils and old vines yield the Côte de Beaune's most powerful, long-lived Pinot Noir, famous for turning deliciously sauvage with age. Maison Saint Vivant is the label of the Gille family, whose estate was built by Vivant Gille (1877–1938) and carried forward by Pierre and Anne Gille: 50-plus-year-old vines farmed without pesticides or herbicides, six days of cold maceration, fermentation on native yeasts alone with no temperature control, and 18 months in medium-toast oak, one-third new. The 2022 — from a ripe, beautifully balanced vintage — delivers deep dark cherry and spice wrapped around violets and forest berries, with the concentration and iron-tinged structure to reward a decade or more in the cellar. Tiny production. Roast game, beef bourguignon, or patience.
