Legend traces Bénédictine to 1510, when a Benedictine monk at Fécamp Abbey supposedly created a medicinal elixir from Norman coastal herbs. The commercial recipe was actually revived in 1863 by wine merchant Alexandre Le Grand, who blended 27 botanicals — saffron, angelica, myrrh, cinnamon, and more — into an amber, honey-sweet liqueur whose initials, D.O.M., stand for 'Deo Optimo Maximo': to God, most good, most great.
